Research and publications

My first book was Loyalism and Radicalism in Lancashire, 1798-1815 (Oxford University Press, 2009). This new book, Protest and the Politics of Space and Place, 1789-1848, was published by Manchester University Press in December 2015.

I am best known for my research on the Luddites, and I have published widely on popular protest and politics in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. You can read my journal articles and see my full CV on my academia.edu profile and my about.me page.

Digital history

I am learning skills in digital history, especially GIS. I was one of the two winners of the 2015 British Library Labs competition for my project ‘Political Meetings Mapper’, which seeks to plot all the Chartist meetings recorded in the Northern Star newspaper. I hope to add this data to the database on this site soon.
